Work by Ian Burn, Christian Capurro, Eugene Carchesio, Sam Cranstoun, Daniel McKewen and Gemma Smith features as part of 'Less than: Art & Reductionism' at the Queensland University of Technology. The exhibition considers reductionist techniques—repetition, limited or monochrome colour, seriality and plain-spoken materials—drawing on the Museum's collection to elaborate on this theme. The exhibition runs until 21 May.
Gemma Smith in Superposition at Artspace, NSW
Gemma Smith with feature in the upcoming show at Sydney's artspace. Her work features in a new show curated by Alexie Glass-Kantor and Talia Linz. This exhibtion features a cross-section of artists of different practices, with a focus on abstraction of the visual, auditory as well as the performative bent.

Eugene Carchesio and Gemma Smith's work is featured in Lightness and Gravity at the Gallery of Modern Art. Lightness & Gravity showcases the Gallery’s contemporary collection in a series of thematic constellations. The title points to a longstanding philosophical discussion of the fundamental character of life (and by extension art making) as weighty, meaningful and constrained by history, or as playful and arbitrary — and thereby free.

LAUNCH- Clayton Utz Travelling Scholarship
Gemma Smith has been awarded the 2009 LAUNCH Clayton Utz Travelling Scholarship. The $10 000 scholarship provides Queensland artists the opportunity to travel within Australia or overseas to undertake formal study, a residency or other professional development activities. Smith was selected from 25 finalists by this year's judge, curator Michael Snelling. Gemma intends to use the bursary to travel to Brazil next year, and complete research at the prestigious Projeto Helio Oiticica.
